In the second installment of Tales of Elegance, we take you to the heart of a passion that spans eras and engines. At the Concorso d'Eleganza Varignana 1705, we met Corrado Lopresto, one of Italy's most renowned collectors, a guardian of masterpieces that tell the story of the automobile.
In this interview, Lopresto reveals his deep connection with a unique car: the 1947 Isotta Fraschini Monterosa 8C. This car is not just a symbol of innovation but also the result of a long pursuit. Let's explore the story, details and timeless love that binds the collector to this rare gem.
What is the story behind the car you brought?
"This year, I brought an Isotta Fraschini 8C Monterosa. It is a unique car because only five models were built on this 8C chassis: two Touring, two Zagato and one Boneschi".
What makes the car special?
"The distinctive feature of this car is its V8 engine positioned at the rear, a groundbreaking innovation for its time. The car has a superleggera patent, meaning a steel structure with a lightweight aerospace aluminum bodywork as well as a Touring patent.
Another remarkable aspect is that it has zero kilometers on the odometer. I purchased it directly from Finmeccanica, the company that owned Isotta Fraschini. These two remaining cars – this one and another 8C Monterosa Boneschi in my garage – were kept by Finmeccanica after acquiring the Isotta Fraschini brand".
How long have you owned the car?
"I bought the car about ten years ago. It had been repainted, but I restored it to its original state as it was presented at the 1947 Paris Motor Show. The interior is original, and since it has zero kilometers, the mechanics are also completely authentic.
This car has a peculiar history, which includes a courtship to ten CEOs who have succeeded each other over the years in Finmeccanica. Finally, Mr. Moretti was convinced to sell it to me, a passionate enthusiast who now proudly showcases it worldwide".
Was there a particular reason you wanted to own it?
"Isotta Fraschini is a true passion, a relentless love. I also own a 1930 Isotta that has brought me great joy, as well as the first car built in 1901. Owning these final models completes the circle. I even have the models produced in 1996 when Isotta Fraschini was briefly revived with designs by Tom Charley Giugiaro. When that venture failed, I acquired those prototypes too.
This passion for the history of Isotta Fraschini has driven me for years, and after a long pursuit, I succeeded".
The Isotta Fraschini Monterosa 8C is not only a testament to innovative engineering and avant-garde design but also a symbol of a passion that transcends time. Through Corrado Lopresto's words, we've traveled through history and emotion, discovering the deep bond between a collector and their car.
